Amish Family Traditions-Their Way Of Life And Income

Amish Family Traditions : Their Way of Life and Income

The Old Order Amish Communities differ somewhat depending on the Bishop and Elders of the church district the families live in, but their day-to-day life is much the same no matter where they are located. Their day begins before dawn with prayer and the daunting daily chores laid out for each member of the family that is old enough to do the smallest tasks. Each child is taught from a very early age of two or three that they will have daily chores and depending on the season of the year will depend on the extra chores each member of the family will have. The younger children are excited to get to help and learn to work with the older children and their parents.

The men and boys usually head out to the barn to do the milking and feeding of the cows or goats, and feeding the other livestock. The younger girls will be gathering eggs and feeding chickens and possibly feeding the hogs. The women and older girls are in the house preparing breakfast and packing lunch for the school age children and the men and boys if they are on a job that takes them away from the home. When breakfast is over the young girls will clear the table and start the task of washing dishes. The older children will help the younger one dress and get ready for school.

Mam (Amish for Mom) will mix bread dough to let it raise and put a cake or pie in the oven for their evening meal, then on Monday's will start the job of laundry. After the laundry is out on the clothes line she will start lunch for the younger children and the rest of the family that is working in the fields and work shop. The table is cleared and the dishes are left for the older children to do when they return from school.

Many of the Amish men have small primitive woodworking shops at home. Their tools are all vintage hand tools but they have mastered the art of creating the best, well-known, indoor and outdoor wooden furniture for your home and outdoor garden area that you will find anywhere. Buyers are willing to travel for miles to place an order for the exact type of wood, color, and style of furniture they want. They realize that the wait of having it handmade and finished by a master craftsman is worth every second.

After the children have returned home from school, they start the evening chores. When the evening meal is over, livestock all taken care of and any garden or farm chores completed, the family will gather around dat's (Amish for dad) steam bent hickory rocker as he reads the Bible for the family evening devotions. The children are allowed then to color or read or play board games while they enjoy some fresh popcorn or fruit snacks. Bed time arrives and with the morning sun the family chores start all over again.
